I just recently re-watched Azumanga and it was so much funnier because we have a roommate now with a VERY similar manner of speaking to the dub Osaka. When he sat down and said "huh...she talks...like a southerner" we could barely contain ourselves. Ah good times, good times.

i watch it in japanese with english sub titles cause i cant stand the texas accent.
but man just how she spaces out and then goes on some awsome rant like about bruce lee and stuff XD

She sounds like she is southern because, in Japanese she sounds southern (to the Japanese, maybe)! She speaks in a Kansai dialect which sounds markedly different than the "typical" Japanese accent. There is some dispute to this, however, because in the manga the decided to give her the more New York style accent. ADV chose the southern style for the anime dub because it "shares the business-oriented attitude with Osaka as well as the country image that color both the Southern and Osaka accents."

Actually, if you watch Love Hina in English Kitsune has a similar accent for the same reason. They do the same thing in the Excel Saga anime for Daimaru Sumiyoshi, although he doesn't speak audibly his written text is in the Kansai style.

i know that but still i wish shed just speak the new york accent or somthing the southern accent just gets on my nerves.

Haha don't know what to tell you. It seems that the localization teams prefer the southern accent vs the New York accent. It kind of bothers me too, somehow it just doesn't feel right for a very obviously Japanese person to sound like a southern American. Hell, I've been around southern accents for most of my life (I actually spent most of it in Texas) and it bothers me. Although...I really think a New York accent would sound simply outrageous coming out of a character like Osaka. Maybe if she was a Yakuza or something...haha. That's ok though because, like you said, you can always just run it in Japanese with subs and then everyone sounds appropriate. Usually, anyway.
